Although we mostly focus on Jack fishing from mid-July through September, anglers may have the opportunity to catch smaller redfish in the marsh or sharks, gar and some occasional large redfish on the edge of the gulf. This fishery is a lot like migratory Tarpon fishing with big fish in clear, shallow water pushing down coastlines over sand. The only difference is, unlike with tarpon, if you make a good shot on the Jack, he will usually eat.  

The Jack Crevalle we will be fishing will be in the 20-30+ lb class range, so we recommend you fish with an 11 or 12-wt rod with a floating line. A typical day fly fishing for Jacks would include 6-12 good shots on average, but, as it is fishing, I’ve had 1-2 shot days and 25-30 shot days.  Also while Jack fishing, we will have a 7-8 wt rod rigged up for smaller species on the flats, such as redfish, trout and sheepshead. This time of year we will be fishing around the New Orleans/Chalmette area. Summer is a good time of year to do a 1/2 day or a 3/4 day because the typical run is short, and afternoons can get brutally hot or rainy, shutting down the fishing.
